Types of MSME Loans Available in 2026
Several debt products are open to MSMEs in India. Which one fits depends on stage, use of funds, and ability to repay:
01Term Loans
A fixed sum repaid over 1-7 years. Used for capital expenditure - equipment, larger premises, or vehicles.
02Working Capital Loans
Short-term credit (6-18 months) for everyday costs - stock, salaries, and receivables. Offered as cash credit (CC) or overdraft (OD) limits.
03MUDRA Loans (PMMY)
Collateral-free credit up to ₹20 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana. Three bands: Shishu (up to ₹50K), Kishore (₹50K-₹5L), Tarun (₹5L-₹20L).
04CGTMSE-Backed Loans
Credit up to ₹5 crore with no collateral, covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises. Available widely from PSU and private banks.
05Invoice Discounting / Factoring
Unlock cash sitting in unpaid invoices. Fintechs and NBFCs finance confirmed B2B receivables within 24-48 hours - see how invoice factoring works and where collection risk sits.
Eligibility Criteria
Lender and product rules differ, but most MSME loans ask for:
- The business running for at least 1-2 years (3 years preferred for larger tickets)
- Annual turnover: ₹20 lakh+ for working capital; ₹50 lakh+ for term loans above ₹25 lakh
- Udyam registration (required for government-backed schemes)
- GST registration plus 12 months of GST returns
- No live NPA (Non-Performing Asset) with any bank
- CIBIL score of 700+ for proprietors/partners (720+ for better rates)
Documents Required
Have these papers ready before you approach a lender so the file does not stall:
- KYC documents: Aadhaar, PAN (promoter + business)
- Business proof: Udyam certificate, GST certificate, Shop Act/trade licence
- Financial documents: 2 years ITR (business + promoter), CA-certified P&L and balance sheet
- Bank statements: 12-24 months of primary business account
- Collateral documents (if applicable): Property title deed, valuation report
- Business plan / projected cash flows (for loans above ₹50 lakh)
How to Maximise Approval Chances
Most MSME loan refusals can be avoided. These steps raise both sanction odds and the terms you get:
01Fix Your Credit Score Before Applying
Pull your CIBIL report, correct errors, and clear outstanding dues 3-6 months before you apply. Each point above 700 can cut the interest rate by 0.5-1%. Lenders look at commercial and consumer credit reports separately, so repair whichever one is dragging the file.
02Maintain Clean Bank Statements
Keep cheque bounces off the account and show regular inflows in the primary bank account. Lenders give the last 12 months the most weight.
03File ITRs on Time
Late or missing ITRs are the #1 cause of MSME loan delays. File on schedule and keep declared income consistent with bank-statement turnover.
04Choose the Right Lender
PSU banks typically price lower but process more slowly. NBFC and fintech lenders move faster and charge more. Match the lender to how quickly you need the money and how large the loan is.
05Apply Through a Loan Consultant
A loan consultant pre-screens your profile across several lenders, prevents hard-inquiry stacking (each rejected application lowers your score), and negotiates better terms.
Government-Backed Loan Schemes
A number of government programmes offer cheaper interest or collateral-free credit to eligible MSMEs:
| Scheme | Loan Limit | Key Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| MUDRA (PMMY) | Up to ₹20 lakh | No collateral, broad eligibility |
| CGTMSE | Up to ₹5 crore | No collateral, credit guarantee cover |
PMEGP (manufacturing)
